From its very first descriptions, research into the placebo effect has been focused inside areas of medicine that surround conditions intuitively thought to be more likely to be remedied by “inactive” modalities.

These conditions share common characteristics: the severity is assessed by self reported, highly subjective symptoms; the condition may have a relapsing-remitting course (and thus a high probability of regression to the mean); and there is often a paucity of objective clinical signs or biomarkers to aid therapy.
