Icelandic microalgae player Algalif says it has received novel food certification from the European Commission for its astaxanthin product.

The firm, which is part of Sana Pharma, said that after extensive evaluation the European Commission and The Food Safety Authority of Iceland certified that its Astalif ingredient meets or exceeds all requirements for an ingredient in food supplements ‘in a manner that is consistent with the current uses and use levels of astaxanthin-rich oleoresins from Haematococcus pluvialis’, and concluded that the ingredient is approved for commercial availability.

“This certification marks a significant milestone for Algalif and represents an important step in our steadfast commitment to quality and purity,” said Andrew Jacobson, CEO of Algalif.

The approval allows the ingredient to be used on the European market.

Jacobson noted that the novel food certification comes on the heels of gaining cGMP status for its production facility: “I commend our Icelandic team led by Orri Björnsson for its ongoing, rigorous efforts in achieving these important industry certifications,” he added.
